Wondering if there is a way for the RNR we can track our runners.

Any suggestions?

So far I've got:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=mobile+phone+tracking+free&aq=1&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=mobile+phone+tracking&gs_rfai=

http://www.trackyou.co.uk/products/fast-track.html

Is there a device that we could put inside the batton that weighs very little that would transmit the location for the 26 hrs of the race so that we can track on the web where our runners are.

Some of the route will have poor/no mobile signal so we
Need something a bit more sophisticated I think

But it's an interesting project

I'll ask a guy who might know!

How about this one?
Endomondo Sports Tracker

Think the download is free.

It's mobile phone based but they do sell an armband to put the phone in!

I've been fiddling with Instamapper this afternoon, and will give it a proper test tomorrow.

I think the best option is to have the support car running an iphone with it (I have a car charger) then as we switch to day/night shift support we can switch phones but change the id number so the tracks go to the same account

I have a spare G1 (with SIM) with Instamapper installed on it. I am more that happy to lend it to the club for the duration of the RNR. At least then there will be one contact number for the whole event.

Thoughts?

I use Endomondo to track Darren on his various sportives to know when he might turn up at a bottle station.  Works really well and updates regularly.  He has a blackberry but any GPS enabled phone works.

Been testing instamapper for a while with my iphone and it's  bit flakey. Apple (god bless them) have blocked it running in the background, so it drops connection really easily if I get a call or read a text etc. I would not say it is reliable enough to be used for 24 hours without a lot of intervention to check its still working.  Cry

I've tried Endomondo with my Samsung and monitored from a PC and it worked well.
It's just weather a phone will last battery-wise for the RNR and the cost.

I have used Instamapper last year and yes it dropped out when phone call received.  Does Instamapper work on iphone4 in multitasking.  I will try it .

I have used Motion-X on my iphone for 2 years now and I know it runs in background on multi tasking, But not sure it will upload and allow people to track live or online.  The only thing I can mention is that we upload each run leg to a Facebook group  TA RNR (Tri-Anglia Round Norfolk Relay).  Someone mentioned that there is intermitant signal on the route so this may cause a problem.

Just an idea chucking here.............

What about these marathon hire pieces they had some for Edinburgh maathon for runners to hire, trying to look if we can hire from somewhere.

I have found this application and it is £2.99 it looks the same as motion-x but i think it does live tracking i'll have a look at it and see how it works.....
