Directions to race venue

From Norwich – take the B1332 towards Bungay and Halesworth. Carry on straight through Bungay town centre heading out towards Halesworth on the A144. As you leave Bungay town you will see Waveney Valley Pool on your right.

From Ipswich – turn off the A12 heading towards Bramfield and Halesworth. Go through Halesworth, taking signposts towards Bungay (A144). Once out of Halesworth town centre, it’s a straight road to Bungay. Just before you reach Bungay town centre you will see Waveney Valley Pool on your left.

From Cambridge – passing Bury St. Edmunds take the A143 towards Diss. Once Diss has been by-passed head towards Bungay and Beccles. Near Bungay, turn right at a roundabout (A144) heading towards Halesworth. As you are leaving Bungay on the A144 Waveney Valley Pool will be on your right.

If, in the unlikely event of an emergency, on the day you think that you will be late or unable to make the start time, then please contact the pool or the race organiser (details above).

Registration

Registration will be open from 6.30am - 7.45am alongside the spectators area by the poolside. You will be given your ‘goody bag’ containing race number, swim cap, race memento etc. Please be patient as this is a small area and will probably be a little congested on the day of the race. The first swimmers will be starting at 8.30am so registration will close at 7.45am sharp. If, for some reason, you think that you may be late for registration then please contact the race organiser. Failure to do so may result in another entrant (reserve) on the day being slotted into your start time!

Race Briefing

The race briefing will be at 8.15am sharp. Weather permitting, this will take place outside the pool. Please do not miss this as it will enable you to have a safer and more enjoyable race. Any appropriate rules will be discussed at this point. If any competitors have any queries about the race then this is the time to question the race referee or organiser.

Swim 400 metres (16 lengths): Competitors will be started in groups of 5, at 5 minute intervals at the deep end of the pool. Your start time will be confirmed at registration, and a printout of the start list will also be placed in the pool window. Please wear the provided swim hat at all times. Competitors may stand or rest on the bottom but may not gain unfair advantage or make progress, other than is deemed necessary to execute the start of the swim. Any recognised stroke is permitted. When a competitor has completed 14 lengths of the pool a sign with a large 2 on it will be placed in the water in their lane - they will then have two more lengths to swim. However, ultimate responsibility for counting the number of lengths rests with the competitor. Please take care when exiting the pool, it may be slippery.

Cycle 20 Kilometres: (route guide supplied below) The cycle course is undulating, with approximately 50 per cent on fast main roads and 50 per cent on small technical country roads. Virtually all of the cycle route is left handed turns, except one turn which is a right turn (please check map for details). Every competitor must ensure that his/her machine is in a safe and roadworthy condition. Competitors must wear their race numbers provided at all times throughout the cycling section of the event and in such a way that it is clearly visible from behind and/or from the side. (Number belts will be allowed, but the number must be on the back for the bike and on the front for the run). Cycle helmets approved by the BSI, ANSI, Snell or equivalent standards authorities must be worn by competitors. These must be fastened before mounting the cycle, worn at all times during the cycling section of the event, and not unfastened until the cycle has been returned to its original position (FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN A 2 MINUTE PENALTY).

Any assistance other than that provided by the organisers will result in a penalty. Competitors are NOT ALLOWED TO DRAFT! The cycle draft zone is defined as a rectangle surrounding every competitor that is 3 metres wide and extends 10 metres behind the front wheel of a competitor’s cycle.

All competitors must follow the normal rules of the road, obey all traffic signals and must follow any directions given by the police, race marshals or officials. Any infringement of the law and subsequent legal action is the sole responsibility of the competitor.

Run 3.2 Kilometres: (route guide supplied below) The run course has a couple of reasonably testing hills in it! No form of locomotion other than running or walking is permitted. No individual support vehicles, cyclists or escort runners are allowed. The competitor's race number must be securely fixed and clearly visible from the front at all times.

Competitors must follow the directions and instructions of all race officials. If any competitor wishes to read any particular rule(s), then a BTA handbook will be available on the day of the race. Please see the race organiser or one of the race officials if you require it.

Transition

Each competitor should choose a space in the Transition area - spaces are not pre-allocated at this event. Please find yourself a slot as soon as possible, and set up with consideration for neighbouring competitors. Transition will close just before the race starts, after which competitors should not enter the area until they are racing. Only competitors will be allowed in transition area at all times. Transition will be re-opened on the race organiser's instruction; competitors need to show their race number and matching bike label in order to remove their bike. This is for the security of your own equipment!

The transition from swim to cycle is straight out of the pool at the deep end, through the exit door and into transition area. Matting will be laid on the floor. Run/walk with your bike through the cycle exit only, mounting at the mount/dismount line (clearly marked) and not before. When coming in from the cycle leg, dismount at the mount/dismount line before entering Transition area, re-rack your bike and then exit through the separate run exit (clearly marked). Please check the transition area before the start of the race to familiarise yourself with exits and directions. They will be clearly signed, and marshals will be in attendance if you need help.

Refreshments

Prizes

There is a strict 'one prize per person' rule, e.g. if someone comes in the first three places, male or female, then they will not be eligible for an age-group prize. The prize-giving will be held outdoors near Transition (weather permitting!), or alternatively on the poolside, approximately 30 minutes after the last competitor has finished. Prizes will be awarded to the first 3 men and women, and to all age group winners depending on AT LEAST three entries received in that particular age-group. If not, age groups will be put together thus receiving one prize between those age groups.

Race Results

Race results will be available on the Tri-Anglia website and sent out by e-mail to competitors leaving their details at registration. For postal results please supply an SAE at registration.

Showers, Toilets & Changing.

These will be located at Waveney Valley Pool. Please note: A returnable 20 pence piece is required for all lockers should you wish to use them.

Parking

This is at Waveney Valley Pool. Parking space will be VERY limited on the day, so it may be necessary to park outside the pool complex. As the cycle route uses the car park access road, it will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the race. If parking on nearby grass verges, please consider traffic and visibility on the race route.

Severe Weather Contingency

If the weather is too bad for the cycle section to take place then the event will be changed to a swim–run, 400m–3.2km.

Marshals

If you have a relative or friend who may like to be a helper on the day then please contact the race organiser as soon as possible.

Further Information

If you cannot participate, please phone or email the race organiser as soon as possible, so that a reserve may take your place. The race is always oversubscribed, and it is disappointing for those on the waiting list to see empty places caused by people not turning up.

Finally above all else, enjoy yourself and may you have a safe and successful race!
