Tri-Anglia Ironman

One of the most guelling challenges in sport and certainly in triathlon is the long distance triathlon with Ironman being the most famous and most established long distance event.  The race consists of the usual three disciplines but the distances are as you'd expect, just that much longer.  The swim is a mere 2.4 miles (3.8km), the bike 112 miles (180km) and the run, just the standard marathon of 26.2miles (42.2km).

In these pages we acknowledge the success and the achievement of those Tri-Anglia members who have gone the distance and recognise the bravery of those members planning on stepping up to the challenge.

Update 7th July 2010

We have four new Ironmen in Tri-Anglia. On 27th June Ace Dann, Pete Newton, James Greenaway and Karl Jermyn all completed their first Ironman distance triathlons. For Ace, James and Karl the sun drenched Cote d'Azure was their location for Ironman France. Pete Newton had a foggy start in the New Forest for his induction to long distance triathlons. Pete was joined by Will Hall and David Maslen who clocked their third and fourth Ironman distance triathlons respectively. That means Tri-Anglia has 62 Ironman members who between them have completed 116 Ironman triathlons.

Our next members to step up to an Ironman Start line do so in July when we have three members appearing at three seperate races. Jonathan Tyrrell is entered for Challenge Roth, Simon Brierley who completed Roth last year is bidding to become the first Tri-Anglia finishers at Ironman Lake Placid in the US and Chris Jenkins is making his first attempt at the distance in Zurich at Ironman Switzerland.

August is again the month for Ironman distance events in the UK and the month starts on the 1st with Ironman UK where we have Alex Nichol attempting her first Ironman triathlon and will become our youngest lady Ironman. Alex is being joined by a fellow Ironman first timers Andrew Goodchild and James Walsgrove. They will no doubt be seeking advice from Ben Walker who is going for his second Ironman UK completion.

The following weekend we have a sizable interest in the inaugural Outlaw Triathlon in Nottingham were club entrants include Matt Spillman, Mark Philo, Ross Campbell, Gavin Barron, Paul Yallop, Sue Potter and Rob Lines. Also on the 8th August, Russell Clarke and Will Hall will both be going 'long' as they make appearances in Lichfield at Enduroman. Will Hall is entered in the Double Iron and Russell the inaugural Triple.

With the European Triathlon's now in full stream, now is the time to get your entries in for 2011 events. The big european Ironmen will sell out within hours of opening up for entries. Austria and Germany particularly sell out in a matter of hours. Events such as Switzerland, Lanzarote and France take a little longer but do sell out. Lance Armstrong has said that he'll retire from cycling after this years Tour and will take on Ironman France next year. Once that entry is confirmed expect to see Nice sell out quickly.

At time of writing, I'm aware of two entries from club members for Ironman Austria, the brothers Dann of Ace and Mitch. Anyone else got their eyes on an event next year? There has been talk of club trip to IM South Africa.
