This is my 4th outing at the Bungay Black Dog half marathon and now my most attended event. I was pondering what to say about it and in passing read Rob’s current update on his trip in S. Africa for the IM next week. He speaks of sunny, but windy and the water is sometimes a tad cold. Well for us lot it was snow and hail on and off for 13 miles. In fact the only thing I could think of worse than this was doing a Duathlon, which of course was going on as a Tri-Anglia event down the road in Diss.
This was my warm-down run for the London Marathon next week and I wanted to run it at around my intended pace.
I arrived to see a few of the earlier starting marathon runners (197 of them including our own Baard Grindberg, Peter Chapman, David Maslan and David Hudson) running in the snow as I huddled in the sports complex from the cold along with the other 373 runners and met up with Mark Hardiman and Jon Tyrrell. Five minutes before the start we evacuated to the start line and were off. The route has changed from a couple of years ago and although the initial Mettingham hills greet you for the first 6 miles, the later stages take you to the East side of town to a footpath near the A143. Marshalling here or at our Duathlon must have been a cold one, so a special thanks to all of you. Drinks were given at regular intervals in plastic cups. They must have been set up early in the morning as at 11 miles for the last drink station, our cups were partially frozen giving us a “slushy”. At least they used warm water for the sponges. For the last 2 miles the snow really went for it so between the constant blinking we got wet and dirty on the footpath and into the sports complex for a muddy finish to receive a coffee mug for our efforts.

Sympathies to Will Hall who had to withdraw due to breaking collarbone and wrist three days before the race. Will was entered in the marathon.
