July 2007.
Jim Keeble and Paul Kemp, made the long journey up to Manchester to compete
in the Triathlon World Cup event at the weekend and rub shoulders with the
world’s top athletes.
The event was held at Salford Quays alongside the Lowry Museum and the
futuristic Imperial war Museum North. It consisted of a two lap 1500m swim,
followed by 24 miles consisting of 8 laps on the bike taking in Old Trafford
football ground and then 4 grueling laps over the Lowry Bridge to complete the
6.2-mile run.
Fortunately after all the bad weather the conditions were kind and we got up
at 0500 on the Sunday morning to be greeted by clear blue skies on a cool
morning.
The jump into the cold dark water of Huron Basin was a bit daunting but we
were soon off bang on time at 0704.
Paul had an excellent swim exiting the water as first in our wave in 24:48
followed by Jim in 27:28, then onto the bike. The laps were quickly ticked off
and Paul was off on the run after 1:03:59 with Jim catching up a few seconds in
1:03:33.
The run as always was tough even though there was only really the hill up and
over the bridge to contend with, but the support as you came into the finish
loop each time was fantastic. Paul completed the run in 48:31 with Jim in 48:45
to give final placing of 34th for Paul in 2:22:45 with Jim in 49th
place in 2:25:19.
Both were really pleased with the race and for anyone who wishes to watch the
main event it will be shown on BBC1 this Saturday (4th August) at
1200.
