This event is becoming quite an established, popular event. It's normally low key - a bit of fun.
The race consists of either 1 or 2 laps of Bungay Common. The choice of
which is entirely your own. You can also choose to run either with or
without your best canine friend. Entries are always on the day and cost a
meer £3, for attached runners or £4 unattached.
The first few years this attracted 70 or so participants. Last year (2006) 108. The
2007 edition attracted 165, with most of them seeming to turn up at 10:20 to sign on for a race starting at 10:30 the race
organisers had no option but to start a few minutes late.
Conditions this year were, well, how do you put it, soft and muddy and being a two lap course ensured that the fields were suitably churned up on your second slide round. There is a very narrow wooden planked bridge across a stream 400m into the lap. I'd recceed the bridge and considered it too
slippery so decided I would run through the swollen stream. Turned out that I was the first to run the stream and made great in-roads into the field - think I was 4th after the bridge having made up 30 places. Didn't stay 4th long. I also doubt I'd have stayed in that position if I hadn't had that fourth portion of Christmas Pud with rum butter and cream.
