Bungay Audax

Saturday 7th April 2007

Five different routes covering 3 different distances ensured that there was plenty of choice for participants.

The event, organised by Godric Cycle Club, offered two different 200k routes - a figure of eight route and an out and back route. Two different 100k routes - a circular "Castle Caper" route and an out and back route to Dereham and a 50k route.

In an Audax the cyclists are expected to follow the route as laid out on instruction sheets that are provided to each rider.  There are no marshals or direction signs though there are check points along the way.  The riders get a time stamp at start and finish and have to get their cards signed at check points and have to answer questions on route to prove they followed the correct route.

Will Meadows, his Uncle and Stewart Ingram followed the circular 100k Castle Caper Route.  Kraig Cole, Paul Cassells and Rob Lines followed the 100k Out and Back Route, with Paul and Rob riding to and from the start to make it up to 100 miles.

i was introduced to some new roads and lanes on the out and back route.  Please to report no real problems with following the directions, though we could easily have gone wrong near the start whilst we were getting used to the abbreviations (TL, RAB, MRAB etc).  We did struggle a little in Dereham locating the mid way cafe check point, the Sticky Bun, which I can recommend.  Paul and Kraig were guilty of half-wheeling on the way back and as a result we average over 19mph compared to our 17mph on the way out.

All in all, a fun little ride out.
