The beginning of November and for most of us it means the end of BST and the start of dark cold evenings. But for four Tri-Anglia members it meant an extra week of sunshine in the warm climate of Southern Spain. Whilst on their holiday, Paul Kemp thought it would be a good idea to enter everyone in a local 10k fun run. His aim was to get his wife Julie to run her first ever 10K. Seemed a good idea – bit of warm weather training. First few days of the holiday weren’t that good with a bit of rain but conditions were ideal for training.
However, the day of the race was a different story: bright blue skies, hot sunshine and by the time the race started temperatures were around 25°C. The first half of the course was very hilly, running into the sun across very dry terrain with no shade and the second half was a long slog along the seafront with no cooling breeze. No water had been available at the start so the sight of 2 water stations along the route was very welcome. Final placings were: Mark Newnham 7th (43.20), Nicky Hawkes 1st female (44.30), Julie Kemp 7th female (1.02.00). Paul completed his aim and said the shouting and swearing at Julie to get round was the most satisfying run he had ever done.
